Secretary Michael R. Pompeo met yesterday with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome. Secretary Pompeo and President Mattarella discussed the strong relationship between the United States and Italy, including bilateral defense cooperation. The Secretary underscored the importance of our shared commitment to NATO and reiterated the importance of Italy, and all NATO Allies, fulfilling their NATO defense spending commitments and increasing their investments in NATO’s collective defense. The Secretary and the President also discussed the importance of U.S.-Italian cooperation in addressing security threats, as well as overcoming economic challenges.
