Secretary Michael R. Pompeo called High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission (HRVP) Josep Borrell on December 14 to congratulate him on his appointment. Secretary Pompeo reaffirmed the importance of the Transatlantic relationship, particularly in an era of great power competition, and underscored the need to safeguard our shared interests and values against malicious state actors. The Secretary and HRVP Borrell discussed the new EU leadership’s priorities and ways the United States and European Union can advance shared regional and global priorities.
