Facebook UK Facing Libel Claim Over Face Masks

Face Mask Warning

Facebook UK Ltd has been notified of a claim being made against the social media giant's UK subsidiary in the United Kingdom over its reckless use of "False Information" warnings.

Two Facebook posts were identified by Facebook as "False Information" despite being true.

The Facebook user who made the posts has informed Facebook of the claim, which alleges libel, in a letter dated 26 June 2020 that was posted online.

The notice letter was originally made public but was quickly removed from publication by Scribd. You can read the letter here.

Among the allegations, the author of the letter wrote:

In what can only be described as an Orwellian explanation, Facebook wrongly suggests that “people are misinterpreting” what is meant by the very plain language printed by a manufacturer on its packaging of the popular blue cosmetic masks we see so much of lately. The manufacturer has written: WARNING: “This product is an ear loop mask, this product is not a respirator and will not provide any protections against COVID-19 (coronavirus) and other viruses or contaminants.” There can be no misinterpretation of those words and I suspect that is why the manufacturer chose to use those precise words.

Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.
