The Office of Global Partnerships at the U.S. Department of State, the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Institute for Business in Society, and Concordia announced the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP) as the winner of the P3 Impact Award at the 2019 Concordia Summit. The annual P3 Impact Award recognizes leading cross-sector collaborations that feature public, private, nonprofit, or non-governmental organizations addressing societal challenges. BIMEP is the sixth public-private partnership to win the annual award, and the first to not only win the P3 Impact Award but to also be selected by the audience from among the finalists for the Audience Choice Award.
The Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project addresses malaria morbidity and mortality affecting the population living and working on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea and informs a broader malaria control strategy for the rest of the African continent. The partnership does this through a long-term public-private funding agreement incorporating the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare partnered with Marathon EG Production Limited, Noble Energy, Atlantic Methanol Production Company, Sanaria Inc., Medical Care Development International, Swiss Tropical, and the Public Health Institute.
U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Keith Krach, gave remarks and announced BIMEP as the winner at the Concordia Summit during U.N. General Assembly high-level week in New York. This was in collaboration with Concordia Co-founder and Executive Board Member Nicholas Logothetis and UVA Darden Professor and Institute for Business in Society Academic Director Mary Margaret Frank. “By using collaborative models and leveraging the strengths of public, private, and civil society partners, the finalists are ensuring the impact they are having today will continue to be sustainable and scalable for the next generation of leaders and innovators,” Under Secretary Krach remarked.
Other 2019 award finalists recognized for their excellence in partnership included: Value Chains for Rural Development, Conservamos La Vida, The Commodity Alliance Forum and Value Chain Development Programme, and Care to Communities.
