Ambassador Jeffrey L. Eberhardt Travel to Nigeria, Belgium, and United Kingdom

Office of the Spokesperson

Special Representative of the President for Nuclear Nonproliferation Jeffrey L. Eberhardt travels to Nigeria December 10-11, Belgium on December 13-15 and the United Kingdom from December 16-20.

In Nigeria, Ambassador Eberhardt attended a workshop on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, which Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted.  The workshop provided a venue for attendees to discuss ideas to reliably and sustainably expand access to the benefits of peaceful uses assistance and cooperation under the rubric of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).  More than 50 representatives from 25 African countries, including diplomats and non-traditional stakeholders from industry, academia and technical fields, attended the workshop.  The outcome from this workshop will be used to develop a unified goal and message at the upcoming 2020 NPT Review Conference.

In Belgium, Ambassador Eberhardt will join the United States delegation at the European Union Nonproliferation and Disarmament Conference.

In the United Kingdom, the Ambassador will attend the 24th Wilton Park Nuclear Nonproliferation Conference where he will join a panel of experts to discuss disarmament diplomacy.  He will highlight the Creating an Environment for Nuclear Disarmament (CEND) initiative, which aims to think creatively, but realistically, about how to enable further progress on nuclear disarmament.
